The Inferno split the weekend against Les Canadiennes de Montreal

Calgary, Alta (Oct. 14, 2018) – The Calgary Inferno opened the 2018-19 Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) season on Saturday night in Montreal, losing their first game 2-1, but making a come-back with a 3-1 win on Sunday.

Saturday night, the Inferno’s newcomers Brianna Decker opened the scoring in the first period with an assist from Zoe Hickel. Seven minutes later Les Canadiennes’ Maude Gelinas tied the game with assists from Catherin Daoust and Tracy-Ann Lavigne. The remainder of the first and second period would remain scoreless. With five minutes left in the game, Les Canadiennes Sarah Lefort, snuck one passed Alex Rigsby to give Les Canadienne the lead, assisted by Hilary Knight and former Inferno Jillian Saulnier. Alex Rigsby had 18 saves on the night and Emerance Maschmeyer, in net for Montreal had 22.

Sunday proved to be victorious for the Inferno, with a 3-1 lead over Les Canadiennes. Ten minutes into the first period Les Canadiennes’, Melodie Daoust opened the scoring, assisted by Marie Philip Poulin and Ann-Sophie Bettez. The Inferno were unable to score for the remainder of the first period, however, they were able to capitalize within the first minute of the second period. Brianne Jenner opened the scoring unassisted to tie the game at one. Seconds later Rebecca Leslie scored her first goal as an Inferno, assisted by Rebecca Johnston to give the Inferno a 2-1 lead. The rest of the period would remain scoreless. With just two minutes to go in the third period, Rebecca Johnston scored an empty net goal to give the Inferno a 3-1 lead. Rigsby was in net for the Inferno with 22 saves, Emerance Maschmeyer saved 14 shots.

The Inferno plan to carry the momentum of this win back to Calgary next weekend for their home opener where they face-off against the Kunlun Red Star in back to back games on Saturday October 20 at 8:00 pm and Sunday October 21 at 10:30 am. Both games are at WinSport. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online.
