Play On! Canada and the Canadian Women’s Hockey League are pleased to announce that they will partner together in efforts to expand female participation in hockey as part of an innovative promotional collaboration.
Play On! — independently managed by non-profit organization Play On! Canada and promotionally supported by Sportsnet and Hockey Night in Canada — is a uniquely Canadian street hockey tournament that attracts hundreds of thousands of Canadians annually from coast to coast.
The CWHL, its member teams, and many CWHL players will be leveraging their social media and other promotional resources to encourage females young and old to sign up to play in Canada’s Largest Annual Sports Festival street hockey events from coast to coast, all as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebration. The CWHL will receive a meaningful financial contribution linked to increases in female participation at these events, with proceeds earmarked to help further amplify awareness and participation in the sport.

“We are indeed delighted to announce this exciting partnership with the Canadian Women’s Hockey League,” said Scott Hill, Founder and National Director of the Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! program. I have been so impressed working with Commissioner Andress, and I am both excited and committed to even more trailblazing together as we invite and encourage even more girls and women to enjoy the wonderful sport of hockey.”
“The Canadian Women’s Hockey League is proud to be involved and promoting the love of hockey off the ice, encouraging the skills and team work that street hockey builds for individuals,” said Brenda Andress, Commissioner of the CWHL. “The love of hockey that Scott and Play On! has brought to the game fits perfectly with the CWHL mission and vision.”
Jamie Lee Rattray, Canadian Women’s National Team Player and member of the CWHL’s Brampton Thunder, has participated in Play On! annually since 2012, winning multiple events. She described the tournament as “literally the best weekend ever.”
Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! was created to capture the spirit of fun in sport, providing access and opportunity for anyone to play street hockey in a highly-organized setting. More than 5,000 teams are expected to gather to participate in one of the fourteen events being held across Canada this May and June.
While participation in Play On! has historically been approximately 93% male, more than 50% of Play On! participants have historically not played ice hockey. Each Play On! festival includes categories for individuals and teams of any skill level, including newcomers to Canada who have never picked up a stick. Anyone can create their own team then choose one of 50 separate boys, girls, men and women’s divisions in which to play. The event also includes a Corporate division, with proceeds donated to local chapters of Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada. Championship medals, apparel, and other prizes are awarded to winners in all divisions.
Play On! is nationally sponsored by Booster Juice, Sportsnet, and VIA Rail, and has additional partnerships with JVCKenwood, Gongshow Gear, TimberMart, Mylec, and Driving Force; official national charitable partners are Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada and Canadian Blood Services. Additional partnership and sponsorship opportunities are still available for a limited time.
