Inferno well represented at Four Nations Cup

Nine Inferno players will lace up for their home nations next week as the international hockey season gets underway with the 2018 Four Nations Cup. The quick, single-round robin format tournament features the best players from Canada, the United States, Finland and Sweden and takes place this year from November 6 – 10 in Saskatoon.

The annual tournament started in 1996 as the Three Nations Cup — Sweden joined in 2000. Each team plays each other once during the tournament — the top two teams compete for gold while the bottom two fight for the bronze medal. The egalitarian hosting format sees the tournament rotate to a different country each year.

Team Canada has a 14-8 record, but the defending champions, the United States, have the threepeat and are looking for their fourth successive win. Finland and Sweden have been denied gold medals so far, but Inferno forward Venla Hovi is hoping to change that this year as she dons the Finnish white and blue.

Joining Hovi at the tournament are Team Canada roster members Rebecca Johnston, Brianne Jenner and Blayre Turnbull at forward, and defenders Halli Krzyzaniak and Katelyn Gosling. Taking to the ice for the United States are forward Brianna Decker, defender Kacey Bellamy and goaltender Alex Rigsby.

The Inferno currently rank first in the CWHL — and with the team’s best players as one another’s competition this week there will be exciting on-ice battles. Rigsby, the rookie goaltender, has seen first-hand what a powerhouse former Olympian Johnston is, and now she’ll end up on the receiving end of that shot. Rigsby will count on Inferno scoring leader Decker to put up points for Team USA.

Catch the Four Nations Cup action starting November 6. Finland suits up against the United States at 12 p.m. CST and Canada takes on Sweden at 7 p.m. CST. Finals take place on Saturday, November 10 with the bronze medal match at 3 p.m. CST and the contest for gold at 8 p.m. CST.

The Inferno are hosting a Four Nations Cup Gold Medal Game Viewing Party starting at 6pm MST at the Upper Deck Public House, 1104 6th Ave SW, Calgary. $10 includes entry and a drink along with a chance to win prizes.
