CALGARY (Nov. 4, 17) – The Inferno defeated the Markham Thunder 3-1 to improve to 4-0-1 on the season.
It was a big night for Jacquie Pierri who played her 100-career game with the Inferno. Before the game she was presented with her jersey from the 2013-2015 seasons.
“It was exciting” said Pierri. “It’s nice to see how much the program has improved since I started and the support from the community is really growing every year, so that’s been really nice to see.”
The game saw goals from Rhianna Kurio, Erica Kromm and Louise Warren for the Inferno, while Karolina Urban answered for the Thunder.
The Inferno had eight powerplay opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on any of them.
“In the powerplay there was a lot of pressure on them and we needed to capitalize,” Kromm said. “It will just be something we have to work on.”
The first period was uneventful with Kayla Gardner taking the first penalty for the Inferno. Devon Skeets and Jamie Lee Rattray also took penalties for Markham.
It would remain scoreless after one. Shots were 12-5 in favour of the Inferno.
The second period proved to be action packed with multiple penalties to both teams. Neither team was able to capitalize on their powerplay opportunities.
“I think our five on five was great and I think our penalty kill was great,” added Kromm. “I think we moved the puck well on the powerplay, just didn’t get any goals. There’s going to be more opportunity to work on that.”
Shortly after Markham successfully killed a penalty, Haleigh Cudmore kept the puck in the offensive zone allowing the Inferno to open the scoring at 8:19 of the second period with Kurio scoring her third goal of the season and assisted by Elana Lovell.
Markham Thunder responded with under a minute left in the period. Urban scored and was assisted by Rattray and Jenna McParland.
After two periods of play, the Inferno and Markham were tied 1-1 with shots 20-14 in favour of the Inferno, however, Markham outshot the Inferno in 12-8 in the second period.
In the third period the penalties did not stop. Markham’s Taylor Woods started the period off in the box for holding. Shortly after, Skeats headed to the box for interference at 12:14. At 7:35 Kromm buried the Inferno’s game winning goal top shelf past Erica Howe.
“I think a huge part of our success tonight was our stops and starts, we had been working on it all week at practice and it gave us some energy, that really made a difference” said Inferno Captain, Kromm.
An empty net goal, scored late in the third by Louise Warren, made it a 3-1 win over the Markham Thunder.
Inferno outshot the Thunder 31-23 with Lindsey Post in net, obtaining her first win in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
The Inferno is hoping to sweep the weekend with back to back wins against the Thunder in tomorrow’s game. Puck drop is at 12:15 pm at WinSport’s Markin McPhail Arena.
