The Max Bell Arena stands were filled with excited fans as they welcomed the Inferno back for
the first home game of the 2017-2018 season. This is the first game between the Inferno and the
Kunlun Red Star, who were added to the CWHL for this season.
The Inferno brought the heat in the first period and battled to keep the puck on the opposing side.
Four minutes into the first, the Kunlun Red Star received a penalty for crosschecking, which the
Inferno was not able to capitalize on. Six minutes later, the Kunlun Red Star received another
penalty for slashing. The first ended with a 0 tie.
Shiann Darkangelo of the Kunlun Red Star ended the stalemate and scored the first goal of the
game two minutes into the second, with assists to Hongxin Yan and Zhixin Liu. With 13:17 left
in the second Kelli Stack scored the second goal for the Kunlun. Seventeen seconds later the
puck bounced back from the net and Annina Rajahuhta jammed the puck in the net, increasing
the lead to 3-0. The Inferno answered back with just over three minutes left in the second, with a
goal from Iya Gavrilova, assisted by Sophie Shirley. The second period ended with the inferno
Both teams fiercely fought for the puck in the third period. The Inferno were not going to let the
Kunlun Red Star win without a fight. With 10:42 left in the game, the Inferno raced the puck to
the opposing side and Elana Lovell put the rebound in the back of the net, scoring the second
goal for the Inferno. Twenty seconds later, the Inferno made an impressive comeback as Rhianna
Kurio shot the puck in the net, tying the score at 3-3.
The teams traded chances through the rest of the third period, but neither could break through in
regulation. With the Inferno on a powerplay, a turn over at the blue-line lead Kunlun to score the
game winning goal with less than a second remaining in overtime. The goal was scored by
Annina Rajahuhta, her second of the game.
This win marks Kunlun’s first of the season. Calgary falls to 2-0- 1 on the season. Tune in
tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at the Winsport A arena, where the Calgary Inferno and the Kunlun Red
Star will conclude the weekend series.
