Calgary, Alta – Oct. 26, 2018 – Fresh off a pair of home ice wins against the Shenzen KRS Vanke Rays last weekend in their home opener, the Calgary Inferno are headed to Massachusetts to face off against the Worcester Blades.
After dominating performances in the first two weeks of league play, the Inferno are the top-ranked team headed into the weekend. They share the top spot with Montreal Les Canadiennes in second and Toronto Furies in third, each with six points apiece though the Furies have one more game in hand than the other leading teams.
The 0-4 Worcester Blades, formerly the Boston Blades who underwent a name change and relocated 50 miles west of Boston, will have an uphill battle to extinguish the Inferno.
On offense, Inferno’s Zoe Hickel is second in the league with six points. The matchup between the two-time IIHF World Champion and Blades’ defender Lauren Williams should prove to be exciting. Williams was the Canadian Women’s Hockey League’s (CWHL) number one overall draft pick last year, playing her last four years in the NCAA at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Hickel leads the Inferno in points.
After last weekend’s wins, Inferno forward Venla Hovi is looking ahead.
“I feel like we just need to build up on last weekend,” remarked Hovie. “We’ve found some more chemistry for sure. We can roll four lines, keep the pace up, and just find more chemistry and keep our feet moving and use the talent we have on our team. That’s all we gotta do.”
The Inferno’s starting goaltender Alex Rigsby will not travel with the team this weekend, this will give netminder Annie Belanger or Lindsey Post a starting spot.
The contests will take place at Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center at 6 pm EDT on Saturday, October 27 and again at 12:30 pm EDT on Sunday, October 28.
The team will get a short break during the Four Nations Cup before heading to Toronto on Nov. 17 with the next pair of home games scheduled for Nov. 24 and 25.
