Inferno dominate Montreal at Wickfest game

CALGARY, Alta (Nov. 24, 2018) The Inferno entertained a big crowd during the Wickfest youth hockey tournament. This weekend series is an important match-up against Montreal to secure first place in the league and the home team came out on top Saturday night, 4-2.

“It was a lot of fun you can really feel the energy of the kids yelling and cheering for us, it’s always fun to play in that type of environment, it gives us a lot of energy,” said Rebecca Johnston with two goals on the night.

The first period started off with a lot of quick paced hockey back and forth. Kaitlyn Willoughby opened the scoring with her first ever CWHL goal, assisted by Louise Warren, nine minutes and 30 seconds into the first period. Just one minute and 27 seconds later Rebecca Johnston scored assisted by Kaitlyn Gosling, to give the Inferno a 2-0 lead halfway through the first period. Defender Brigette Lacquette was up in the play and scored with just over a minute remaining in the first to give the inferno a 3-0 lead. Shots on net were 12-7 in favour of the Inferno.

Montreal’s Melodie Daoust got Montreal on the scoreboard in the second period, assisted by Taylor Willard and Erin Ambrose. Five minutes later Ann-Sophie Bettez scored to draw Montreal within one, assisted by Melodie Daoust and Melanie Desrochers.

After two frames shots on net were 22-13 in favour of the Inferno

The Inferno started out the third period with Brianna Decker in the penalty box, serving a two-minute minor for tripping. The Inferno caught a lucky break with a two on one opportunity shorthanded. Rebecca Johnston and Brianne Jenner slid one past Montreal’s Emerance Maschmeyer, to restore their two-goal lead. Montreal couldn’t put another one past Alex Rigsby. The Inferno outshot Montreal 31-21, to pick up their eighth straight win.

Alex Rigsby played in net for the Inferno and saved 19 of 21 shots.

Emerance Maschmeyer saved 27 of 31 shots.
