Calgary, Alta – Jan.3, 2019 – The league-leading Inferno will head to Markham for the teams’ first games of 2019 on January 5 and 6. Fans can tune in to Sportsnet for Sunday’s broadcast starting at 1:30 pm ET.
Calgary sits seven points ahead of third-place Markham and three points ahead of the second-place Les Canadiennes. Calgary is 3-0-0-1 this season against Markham, with the loss coming in overtime in December. This is the last time the teams will play each other in the regular season. Calgary has done well so far this season, with the majority of their games before the holiday break, however, they will need to remain focused to maintain their standing during the rest of the regular season.
“There’s not much of a lead when you look at the league standings; Montreal is nipping at our heals so it’s important not to take any night or any game for granted,” remarked Inferno coach Ryan Hilderman. “We have a team of very experienced hockey players who know how to prepare night in and night out. We expect to pick up where we left of in terms of our play. We had lots of ice time this week, so we’ve been able to work on some things and shake off the rust at the same time.”
On offense, Calgary’s Rebecca Johnston is third in league points with 25 while teammates Brianne Jenner and Brianna Decker have 18 and 17 points respectively and are in the top 10 in the league standings. Brianna Decker will be off this weekend and next, in her role as assistant coach of the the United States U-18 Women’s team at the Under-18 World Championships in Japan. On the other side of center, Markham’s Victoria Bach will be the one to watch with 17 points.
In the net, Calgary will have the option to start Annie Belanger (1.42 GAA) or Alex Rigsby (1.59 GAA). The two sit in the top three in league goalies, just behind Montreal’s Emerance Maschmeyer. Markham has had success with both Erica Howe (2.60 GAA) and Liz Knox (3.01 GAA) taking turns in net.
In other league play this weekend, Montreal hosts Toronto and Worcester hosts Shenzen. Saturday’s 12:30 pm ET match up featuring Montreal and Toronto will also air on Sportsnet.
