Calgary, AB – The Calgary Inferno have had a record season and have finished in the top spot in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL). They will host the Toronto Furies in the semi-final playoffs February 24th and 25th with a third game, Sunday the 26th if necessary.
Among other records set by the team this season for the most points and the top spot in the regular season, the Inferno look forward to hosting the first ever women’s professional hockey game in a town north of Calgary. The Rocky Mountain Female Hockey League (RMFHL) stepped-up to offer ice in Carstairs.
“We feel that building a relationship with the Calgary Inferno will help in the recognition of an amazing sport in which all females can play,” remarked RMFHL president Jessie Cooper. “Both groups are about recognizing the importance of females in sports and we hope that by assisting the Inferno and hosting a playoff game we can offer the opportunity for more young women see the sport at a different venue.”
Calgary has won all six regular season games against the Furies, who finished with 22 points compared to Calgary’s 40.
“I think our balanced attack will be a big key for the playoffs. We have 12 forwards that can play on any given team and on any given line. Our defense is very solid and we have arguably three starting goalies,” remarked Calgary’s head coach Scott Reid. “So, our balanced attack has gotten us to where we are and hopefully it can keep us going to where we need to get to.”
The winning team will advance to the Clarkson Cup Championship Game March 5 at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa to face off against the best of Les Canadiennes de Montreal and the Brampton Thunder, playing in Montreal this weekend in the second semi-final. There is the possibility that fans will witness a championship game rematch between last year’s defending champions, Calgary Inferno and Montreal.
