Calgary Inferno Beat Boston Blades on You Can Play Night

CALGARY, Alta (Feb. 24, 2018) The Calgary Inferno defeated the Boston Blades in the first game of their last home game series of the regular season. The Inferno sported their rainbow jerseys in support of You Can Play (YCP). You Can Play is a non-profit organization dedicated to the inclusion of all players regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Cheryl Macdonald, Co-Chair of You Can Play and Elysa Sandron, a University of Calgary Rugby player, dropped the puck for the ceremonial puck drop to kick start the YCP Inferno home game against Boston. Fans were treated to gelato from Fiasco Gelato as well as special raffles as a fundraiser for YCP. The players’ rainbow jerseys will be available in an auction with proceeds going to YCP. The link to the auction will be posted on the Inferno website and social media on Sunday.

The Inferno had a slow start after the two-week break.

“We had to find our groove, but once we did and started doing the little things we’ve been practicing we had a strong game” said Katelyn Gosling.

Boston’s Sato Kikuchi opened the scoring with her first ever CWHL goal, assisted by Kate Leary and Courtney Turner. The Inferno responded just minutes later with Kayla Gardner scoring her sixth goal of the season, assisted by Brittney Fouracres and Sophie Shirley.

Hayleigh Cudmore was sent to the penalty box halfway through the first period and the Blades’ Meghan Greives capitalized on the opportunity and scored a powerplay goal assisted by Kate Leary and Melissa Bizzari.

Four minutes later Hayleigh Cudmore tied the game 2-2 with a goal assisted by Katelyn Gosling and Iya Gavrilova. Shots at the end of the first were 15-12 in favour of the Blades.

The second period was uneventful, with the only goals scored in the last two minutes of the period. Britney Esposito capitalized on a late penalty taken by Boston to give the Inferno a 3-2 lead, assisted by Gosling and Elana Lovell. Taryn Baumgardt scored with 0.07 seconds left on the clock, assisted by Iya Gavrilova, making the score 4-2 Inferno after two periods of play.

Shots were 22-8 in favour of the Inferno.

Kelty Apperson scored late in the third period, unassisted on the powerplay. Kennedy Brown scored with one minute and 43 s left in the third to give the Inferno a 6-2 lead, assisted by Gavrilova and Laura Dostaler. The Inferno finished strong in the third, outshooting the Blades 14-2.

Delayne Brian was in net and made 20 saves. Boston’s Lauren Dahm made 51 saves on the night.

Looking forward into tomorrow’s game the Inferno plan to have a “better start and play the full 60 minutes like we ended today” said Gosling.

The Inferno’s last regular season home game will be Sunday February 25 at 12:30 pm at WinSport Arena A.
