Calgary, Alta – Dec. 14, 2018 – For the first time, the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) will play in Red Deer as Hockey Alberta hosts a day-long celebration of female hockey.
Saturday, December 15 is the inaugural Female Hockey Day, featuring development sessions for those involved in the sport. The Inferno will be working with players at skill sessions throughout the day. They will also be speaking to groups off-ice and answering any questions the youth have. The finale to a great day of hockey is the matchup between the Calgary Inferno and the Toronto Furies.
Last weekend, the Inferno swept the weekend series on the road against the Markham Thunder.
They are on top of the CWHL in league standings and hope to keep it that way with their home ice advantage this weekend. Toronto is currently in fifth spot in the league, looking to build on their six wins this season.
Forward Brianne Jenner is one of the Inferno’s points leaders, and ranks among the top ten in the entire league. She feels good about the team’s chances to stay at number one.
“We’re focused on our identity this weekend,” says Jenner. “We’ve done our homework and watched some video on Toronto, but ultimately it’s about us executing our game plan. We feel confident with the week of practice we’ve had.”
Of Toronto, Jenner says they’re a solid team, citing one player in particular she’s watching out for. “Certainly having played with Renata Fast last year and at Four Nations I know what she’s capable of and respect her game a lot. She’s always a player we have to be aware of both defensively and offensively.”
The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer. Tickets are available at the door or in advance at https://rdctickets.universitytickets.com/w/event.aspx?id=1435&p=1. Sunday’s contest has the Inferno back in Calgary at WinSport’s Joan Snyder Arena at 10:30 a.m. These are the last games before the holiday break.
The Calgary Inferno ask that any media planning to request interviews with the Inferno on Saturday please contact Tammy. Any media wishing to attend during the day’s skills sessions are asked to contact Brad Lyon.
